Opinion: Top 5 Movies of 2017

December 24, 2017

As 2017 comes to a close, “Best of” articles will be plastered all over Twitter and Facebook, as well as The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly. So, to wrap up the year, here are the 5 best movies I have seen this year in no particular order.

Wonder Woman

The first live action depiction of Wonder Woman landed perfectly and resulted in a magical film that will live on as one of the best superhero movies ever made. Patty Jenkins directing and Gal Gadot’s performance as the title character make this movie feel special in a way no other movie did this year. The scene where Princess Diana climbs out of the tr

enches and walks into the middle of No Man’s Land will give chills to anyone. There is a reason this movie was number 1 at the summer box office.

Logan

Logan is the final appearance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and it is a beautiful goodbye to a character we’ve been watching for over a decade. The second superhero movie to ever earn an R-rating used it to its advantage greatly, resulting in brutal fight scenes and an epic finale. The movie creates real, believable characters and gave fans a great ending to one of the most iconic superheroes of our time.

Star War: The Last Jedi

Quite possibly the most divisive movie released this year, the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise gives a breath of fresh air to the series. The Last Jedi does not feel like any of the other movies, which works in its favor this time around. Rian Johnson directed a gorgeous looking film that has very fun moments but also creates great stakes for the characters that were not in The Force Awakens.

Baby Driver

Baby Driver is best experience I had at the movies this year. Edgar Wright creates action sequence after action sequence, perfectly choreographed to the best soundtrack of the year. The stunts in the movie are absolutely insane and just a blast to watch. The film does not drop when there are no car chases, as Ansel Elgort, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and others create hilarious characters that bring the movie's world to life and prevent this from becoming  one-dimensional action flick.

Ladybird

The only non-action movie in this article is, without a doubt, the best movie I have seen this year. Saoirse Ronan stars in this coming of age story, beautifully told in the city of Sacramento (I am from Sacramento so I might be biased) about a girl who wants to get out. Ronan delivers a beautiful performance alongside Laurie Metcalf as her mother. With an amazing script that delivers the humorous essence of high school, the movie also creates great tension and drama. I expect Ladybird to be nominated for many Oscars and to win some as well.

As a whole, 2017 was a year full of a bunch of “pretty alright” movies. But there are definitely those who stood out and performed better than others. To the 9 of you that will read this, I wish you a Happy Holidays and Happy New Years.
