Oscar nominations come out next week and the race for best picture nominations are heating up.
While only ten movies can be nominated, there are fourteen films that are "in the running" for the best picture award. It seems that there are seven movies destined for the nomination : Call Me By Your Name, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Shape of Water, Dunkirk, Ladybird, Get Out and The Post. These movies have been consistently winning in their categories since awards season began.
The other half of the possibilities are all up in the air. Here is a list of those seven films and why they could be nominated.
I, Tonya was nominated for a Golden Globe, which sparked backlash against the Hollywood Foreign Press . There are those who believe a movie about Tonya Harding should not be promoted or glorified. Typically, the Academy listens to audiences' critiques more than other awards association. Nevertheless, I, Tonya has received a great deal of praise, so a nomination for best picture would not come as a shock.
The Big Sick is based on the true story of how co-writers Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and Emily V. Gordon met and fell in love. The film was arguably criminally shutout from the Golden Globes, but it has since received six Critics Choice Awards, including best picture and best comedy. It was also named one AFI’s best film of 2017. The Big Sick has heart and is extremely well written, which could easily earn it a nomination. While the film's being snubbed would be disappointing, it would not be surprising.
The Greatest Showman received mediocre reviews, despite gaining a nomination at the Golden Globes. It is a musical, with music by the Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land), about chasing dreams. To its benefit, The Academy typically loves movies like that. It seems quite possible, despite the poor reviews, that The Greatest Showman could see a nomination.
Battle of Sexes came out at the beginning of awards movie season and fell to the back of the pack. In spite of this, it was reviewed as an excellent story featuring outstanding performances. Of the seven movies vying for the remaining Best Picture spots on this list, Battle of Sexes is the most likely to receive a nomination.
Although a comic book movie has never received nomination, Wonder Woman could just break this mold. In a year with a focus on female empowerment, Wonder Woman represents what everyone wants to see. Patty Jenkins (Monster) crafted a visually gorgeous film and led strongly by Gal Gadot (Furious 7). As previously stated, The Academy listens to audiences' opinions, so this movie has a real shot at a nomination.
Before this, The Disaster Artist would have been a definite nominee. All this changed, however, after James Franco’s Golden Globe win, when five woman accused him of sexual harassment. Franco, along with the film, has received major push back and fallen out of favor because of these accusations. Nevertheless, the film is well-made, and fits the mold of typical Academy nominations. It is extremely unlikely Franco will receive a Best Actor nomination and, seeing as he also directed the film, it appears unlikely that The Disaster Artist will be a nominee.
