One Small Step for Marvel, One Giant Step for Womankind

October 4, 2018

For the first time, Marvel is releasing a female-led movie, Captain Marvel. This is a huge step for Marvel, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) itself will change forever. Following the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel is needed to help save the universe. As one of the few people able to defeat Thanos, the Avengers are in need of her expertise.

The trailer for Captain Marvel recently came out and shocked the fans of Marvel. While there have been multiple female superheroes in the MCU, none of them have had a big part in the movies as almost all of the movies center around the male superheroes. When DC’s Wonder Woman came out, it changed the game for female superheroes and opened a new door.

Captain Marvel is a prequel to the “normal” Avengers movies and takes place in the 90’s. Viewers can see young characters such as Nick Fury (with both eyes!) and Phil Coulson make appearances. With the superpowers of post-production editing, Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg are made to look much younger, just like Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War:. Only a teaser trailer is out, but from what has been released, Captain Marvel already looks very powerful and able to fight anything that comes her way.

Marvel fans know that she will help defeat Thanos due to the post credit scene from Avengers: Infinity War.

Warning: spoilers ahead, but very important spoilers! After Thanos snapped and got rid of half of the people and resources on the universe, the movie ends with his being happy with what he did. The post credit scene shows two of the favorites, Nick Fury and Maria Hill, driving until they are forced out of the car. Maria Hill turns to ash first, and Nick Fury rushes for something. He manages to send an emergency code before he turns to ash, too, and the last thing seen before the movie ends is the Captain Marvel logo on the transmitter. Captain Marvel is on her way, and everyone, fans and characters included, is ready for it.

With Captain Marvel being the first female-led Marvel movie, it opens the idea of more female superheroes getting their well-deserved spotlight. There has been talk of Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, getting a movie of her own, and Marvel has reportedly been looking for a director. Cindy Moon, the secret identity of Silk, has been rumored for a movie as well through Sony, to go along with the new Spider-Man reboot. There have also been rumors of Wanda Maximoff, Scarlet Witch, getting a TV show.

It makes everyone think who will be the next female to lead on the big screen: will it be one we have already seen? Or one yet to be introduced? Could Squirrel Girl make an appearance? Squirrel Girl is undefeatable, and could also help in the fight against Thanos. Or will it be Cassie Lang, Ant-Man's daughter, and her band of Young Avengers? After Ant-Man and The Wasp, Cassie could really take after her father and bring in younger, lesser-known characters; not to mention bring more LGBT+ representation to the MCU superheroes.

Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 finish out Phase three of the MCU. However, the fate of the MCU is full only of theories until the next Avengers movie comes out. There is very little idea of which heroes will survive and which will die. Inevitably, the MCU will lose some of its favorite heroes. Though it is hard to think about, it does bring a fun aspect of trying to figure out who will join the Avengers and the current MCU as the next favorite superheroes to protect the Earth.

The comics go many different ways, with all the universes in the multiverse, it gives the fans millions of characters and possibilities to theorize. While the movies do not follow all the comics, there are endless theories and ideas to explore and think about! Captain Marvel is just the beginning of a whole new, diverse, and inclusive Marvel.
