Fires in the Amazon

The Amazon is burning! Numerous fires have caught flame throughout Brazil in 2019. It's not one fire as some may think.

There have been more than 80,000 fires this year. More than half of these fires have taken place in the Amazon. Experts say it due to deforestation.

People cut down areas of the forests then set the matches. Some also set it ablaze for the growth of pastures for cattle, and to replenish the soil.

Everyone on the planet benefits from the Amazon. The trees take in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. The Amazon plays an important role in pulling greenhouse gasses out of the atmosphere.

Carlos Quesada, a Brazillian scientist, said that “the Amazon was buying you some time that it is not going to buy anymore.”

If the Amazon dies, it won’t go down peacefully. Plants and trees would disappear releasing billions of carbon emissions. This makes a climate catastrophe inevitable.

However, efforts are being taken to reduce fires. The world's seven largest economies are donating millions to save the Amazon.

It’s time to take a look back and realize we can’t keep going the way we are. We need to save the planet we call home.
