Climate Strikes Take World by Storm

September 17, 2019

Students, parents, unions, and other protesters worldwide prepare for a climate strike Friday, September 20th.

These strikes will take place just three days before the United Nations’ climate summit on September 23rd in New York and are expected to be even bigger than the strikes in March, 2019, that brought together 1.5 million protesters worldwide in favor of fighting climate change.

There are over 120 countries worldwide where strikes are planned, with over 500 planned strikes in the United States alone. A particularly large planned strike, lead by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, is to take place outside of the United Nations building in New York City.

Thunburg, 16, has lead many in believing curbing carbon emissions is a moral responsibility, and these strikes are necessary in getting the attention of those who have the power to fix the global climate crisis.

Thunberg is not the only one leading these strikes. Countless businesses, unions, nonprofit organizations, and communities have joined Thunberg in these student-led strikes.

Through the student climate strikes, many young people have been empowered to protest for the betterment of the world’s climate.

There is a strike planned from 12:00-2:00pm outside Columbus City Hall on Friday, September 20th.

“Our house is on fire--let’s act like it,” the Global Climate Strike website said.
